Way Back Wednesday takes us back to the era of girl groups this week. Originally a collection of five singers, Xscape burst onto the scene in the early 1990s on BET’s Teen Summit with their rendition of En Vogue’s mega hit ‘Hold On’.
This is exactly what R&B is missing today – a girl group! The energy, the harmonies and the mix of the styles with which different people can identify are all an integral part of the music scene.
Many took for granted the impact that singing groups had on the industry because there were so many present throughout the 90s but it is obvious today they broke the monotony that would have otherwise been the redundant scene that we are seeing today. En Vogue, Xscape, TLC and Destiny’s Child all delivered in their time and now we desperately need a new collective.
