Lady Gaga better brace herself because the original Queen of Pop is plotting a comeback. Madonna has announced that her new album will be released in spring 2012 and that the project’s first single being serviced to radio by March.
Madonna broke the news during an interview with Sweden’s Sveriges Television (SVT) and confirmed that she has already commenced work on the record alongside her ‘Ray of Light’ collaborator, William Orbit. The icon’s last studio album, ‘Hard Candy’, has thus far sold 739K copies in the US since 2008 and remains her second lowest-selling LP in that country to date.

Regardless of how exciting this news will be for her fans, Madonna now faces an interesting predicament: she will be reentering an industry that may have left her behind. With Lady Gaga currently dominating her former market and utilising visual antics that inspire similar (if not greater) shock and awe, Madonna will either have to find innovative ways to compete with Gaga and reclaim her fanbase or try yet another new sound. Indeed, what incentive do consumers have to support Madonna’s music when they already have a younger and more relatable version of her to enjoy in the form of Gaga?
Furthermore, as a woman in her 50s, there will undoubtedly be some pressure for her to conform to the media’s standards of ‘age appropriate’ behaviour. Hence, that will surely dampen Madonna’s undying motive to sell sex, which has been her main claim to fame since her debut.
Certainly, we have witnessed several of music’s former champions and Madonna’s rivals, including Mariah Carey and Janet Jackson, struggle in recent years to remain relevant amongst the current generation of artists. Thus, it will be interesting to see what approach Madonna takes with her new album.
If Orbit is able to recapture the creative energy that they had when writing songs such as ‘Frozen’ and ‘The Power of Goodbye’ then Madonna will have a fighting chance. On the other hand, if they fail and she stumbles on the charts then Madonna could always go on tour where she has absolutely no competition. She was the most successful solo touring act of the 2000-2009 decade in the US with revenue surpassing $801,299,671 after all.
