It has been almost a year since Mariah Carey released new material and now, just hours after the debut of his ‘Body & Soul’ video with Amy Winehouse, Tony Bennett has answered the call of her fans. ‘When Do The Bells Ring For Me’ was recorded earlier this year and will be included on Bennett’s ‘Duets II’ album.
A snippet of the track surfaced earlier this month and featured Carey’s transformed voice. Listen to the full song below:
Carey’s vocal styling on this song follows traditional Jazz singing yet is starkly different to the weighted tones of Winehouse. It is incredible witness how her voice has changed over the years – it is not as husky and full as it was in her younger years when she sang ‘The Wind’ on the ‘Emotions’ album. Rather, it is lighter and raspier yet somehow more focused and controlled.
As impressive as this performance sounds, however, Carey would undoubtedly try a different approach on her next studio album. The shallow consumers of the current generation simply doesn’t appreciate or understand this type of music.
Hopefully, she will find a healthy balance but until then I will be swaying in this greatness. Let’s give Carey a round of applause!
