Adele’s medical issues has forced her to cancel several of her US tour dates but amidst all of her misfortunes, she now has a reason to celebrate. the Pop/Soul singer’s ’21′ album has achieved a feat that many thought was impossible in 2011 – it has been certified 4x platinum by the RIAA.
With sales exceeding 3.7 million copies at US retailers, ’21′ has also shipped over 4 million units in that territory. As of last week, the record spend a record-shattering 31 weeks in the top 5 of the Billboard 200. The lead single from ’21′, ‘Rolling in the Deep’, also holds the title for being the fastest-selling single in US history with over 5.1 million downloads sold in 2011 alone and is the only track to pass the 5 million mark in a calendar year.
In addition to being the top-selling album of the year to date in both the US and UK, ’21′ is also the most successful release of 2011 worldwide with sales surpassing 10.41 million copies. Moreover, combined with the sales of her debut LP, ’19′, Adele has sold over 12 million albums globally since January.
