Ashanti is currently preparing for the release of her new single, entitled ‘No Good’, later this year. However, before she introduces her new sound on the radio, she gave people a preview of what they could expect from her voice by joining legendary producer David Foster onstage to put her lungs to the ultimate test with covers of Whitney Houston’s ’I Have Nothing’ and ‘I Will Always Love You’.
The most recent new song released by Ashanti was ‘Never Too Far Away’ from the ‘Dream House’ soundtrack. Coincidentally, the singer/songwriter channeled several elements of the horror film with her versions of Houston’s hits.
Watch Ashanti in action below:
Every time Ashanti finally seemed to be building to a good vocal run or solid note, she tragically veered of course and struggled to handle the songs, particularly on ‘I Will Always Love You’. She even had to prematurely end several of her belts because she was blatantly out of breath and it sounded as though her vocal cords were being pulled like a slingshot.
Why would David Foster – the man who produced Houston’s version of ‘I Will Always Love You’ – allow Ashanti to subject herself to such embarrassment? Honestly, he seemed quite snide near the end of the performance when he told her to hit the show-stopping climactic note when all she did was scream bloody murder at the unsuspecting audience.
On the bright side, Ashanti’s closing high falsetto was quite pleasurable. Perhaps, she should have just rearranged the songs to better suit her voice and highlighted her few strengths.

This whitney gif tho… lmbaooooooooo
She was ok at best
She just ruined any chance of a vocal return -_- who in there right, sober, drugged, or delusional mind would let someone of her vocal standards attempt such big ballads. She is just not vocally equipped to deliver, like Trent said everytime she did somethign impressive it was followed by ruin. Smh
she would’ve did ok if she didn’t try to belt out the song. besides that i don’t know why any singer think they can sing a whitney song, its like they love to embarrass themselves.
it was ok
GO THE FUCK AWF ASHANTI!!!!
She did a good job. she did better than the current Whitney. it took Whitney 10 min to sing this song when she was on tour, she took a water break after each verse.
She did pretty good during “I Have Nothing” but terrible during “I Will Always Love You”. Although she sounds better than she used to and I applaud her effort, she needs vocal training and needs to learn her limitations.
Why would you don’t do that to yourself , singing a song formerly sung by The VOICE , the greatest vocalist of the last 30 years .
Sorry but she does not sound better than even the current Whitney. Whitney is still a vocal beast when her voice isn’t in tired mode, she’s just inconsistent now
Ashanti sounds better then what she used to sound
Girl Bang
shes not singing, she’s yelling and anybody can do that. ashitty need singing lessons ASAP. I dont know if I want to even watch the 2nd song. Lawd have mercy, she butchered that song. Whitney is somewhere cringing.
Ok I love that gif! Trent you’re the best man!
why would anyone wanna do a whitney song? she sounded pretty good in the first song, but the second oh boy did she fuck it up. lmao. silly girl,
*pulls out chair for Ashanti*
Ashanti is cool wit me but when dude stopped the music to tell her to bring it home with that note…….I DIED LMFAO
she sounded better than i expected tbh
She sounded alot better. She can atleast carry a tune. She had her good moments. It wasn’t terrible. She was reaching for some of those notes. But it was a good effort. She just needs to find her comfort zone. The falsetto was excellent.
This is the way on how to sing that medley http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jS1qbxyJXvw
I like Ash I believe she has something really cute in her voice but I didn’t recognize it here. If I were to guess who was singing… I would’ve never guessed. Not an impressive perf, not even moving in my opinion, where’s the passion ?
at least she doesn’t sound like a goat
THAT WAS HORRIBLE why would you embarras yourself like that with a song already PERFECTLY coverd by the said ”the most talented girl in the world” (oprah) CHARICE!!! And DF shame on you!! for allowing this to happen!! labyo cha!
I WOULD TELL ASHANTI TO STAY IN HER LANE, BUT SHE REALLY NEEDS TO GET OFF THE STREETS!
I find it hard to believe she did this live…..
ashanti did a great job…i wasnt even expecting that as an RnB artist she can hit high notes like a diva…although that Charice can do it better
[...] received mixed reviews when she performed covers of ‘I Have Nothing’ and ‘I Will Always Love You’ in tribute to Whitney [...]
oh cmon! She did a good job? You guys have to clean your ears! She screeched at 03:35! As I watch the video, I couldn’t help myself but LOL… hahaha. She is a diva… a SCREAMING diva! :-p. BTW… I think this version of IWALY medley is way better. Check this out!
As much as I love Ashanti, I must admit, her voice, which remains clean, clear, and light as a feather, doesn’t have the vocal gusto to emote the notes in a manner that Whitney did. Other sings with the vast range have attempted and receive a welcoming embrace from the public, such as Charice, Leona Lewis and Alexandra Burke, but all comparisons draw back to the original. We easily forget that “I Will Always Love You” used to be a Dolly Parton song: something whimsical, flat and dull…until Whitney Houston re-created it with her powerhouse vocal ability, it breathed new life into the song. Ashanti can sing, despite the naysayers, but this was out of her league. Like Trent stated above, there were some shining moments when Ashanti sung some parts, but it was the belts in full voice that were the issue. Ashanti’s voice isn’t full, hence she fell flat quickly. She doesn’t have much of a range; she’s a comfort zone singer (one who doesn’t explore much of their range/have no bottom voice). Hopefully, she can fix the wrongs next time by practicing and making the song her own instead of trying to compete it so close to the original, but she definitely falters standing singing such an iconic song.
