Beyonce has never been known for her originality but her latest scandal has sparked a fresh wave of public indignation with her actions. Shortly after releasing the video for ‘Countdown’, Belgian choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker slammed the singer for copying several dance moves and even the wardrobe from her ‘Rosas danst Rosas’ and ‘Achterland’ works.
However, Beyonce, who is also dealing with accusations of falsehood regarding the nature of her baby bump following her appearance on ‘Sunday Night’, has retorted by claiming that she was simply “paying tribute”. This situation follows a similar problem in 2008 where Beyonce was also accused of stealing her ‘Single Ladies’ routine from Bob Fosse until she was forced to state where she discovered the dance.

Keersmaeker on Beyonce.
“I’m not mad, but this is plagiarism. This is stealing. It’s a bit rude. What’s rude about it is that they don’t even bother about hiding it.”
“Beyonce is not the worst copycat; she sings and dances very well, and she has a good taste! On the other hand, there are protocols and consequences to such actions, and I can’t imagine she and her team are not aware of it.
“In the 1980s, this was seen as a statement of girl power, based on assuming a feminine stance on sexual expression. I was often asked then if it was feminist. Now that I see Beyoncé dancing it, I find it pleasant but I don’t see any edge to it. It’s seductive in an entertaining consumerist way.”
Beyonce on Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker claims.
“Clearly, the ballet ‘Rosas danst Rosas’ was one of many references for my video ‘Countdown’. It was one of the inspirations used to bring the feel and look of the song to life.”
“I was also paying tribute to the film, ‘Funny Face’ with the legendary Audrey Hepburn. My biggest inspirations were the ’60s, the ’70s, Brigitte Bardot, Andy Warhol, Twiggy and Diana Ross. I’ve always been fascinated by the way contemporary art uses different elements and references to produce something unique.”

If Beyonce wants to be a true icon and continue the legacy of Michael Jackson, as her PR team inaccurately tries to force people to believe, then she will have to move beyond simply being inspired and learn to inspire others. There is absolutely no excuse for this kind of behaviour from any business or artistic perspective.
Indeed, although Jackson himself did not invent some of his more famous moves, he always paid homage to the originators so that his legacy would never be tarnished by accusations of theft. Until Beyonce learns to do the same without being pressured by the media then she will never be a regarded as a pioneer or a legend; she will always be a just another pretender to the throne.
