Did you know that Queen Latifah was the first female Hip-Hop artist to win the Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance?
Queen Latifah earned the honor at the 1995 with her biggest hit, ‘U.N.I.T.Y.’. Interestingly, a female artist did not win the title again until 2002 when Missy Elliott nabbed trophy with ‘Get Ur Freak On’.
The Best Rap Solo Performance category, which was formed in 1991, was later split into Best Female Rap Solo Performance and Best Male Rap Solo Performance in 2003 before being merged again in 2005 because of a lack of popular content from female Hip-Hop acts. In 2012, however, the original category of Best Rap Performance will be reintroduced, thereby eliminating distinctions between males and females as well as the Best Rap Performance by a Duo/Group field.
