Adele has proven once again that even the most efficient marketing team can’t overcome the power of true talent. The British Soul singer’s ‘Someone Like You’ has maintained its grip on the top slot of the Billboard Hot 100 and effectively denied Rihanna a chance to score her 11th #1 single with ‘We Found Love’.
‘Someone Like You’ has landed at #1 on the tally for a 5th week and accomplished yet another remarkable feat. Following the 7-week run at the top of the Hot 100 by her previous single, ‘Rolling in the Deep’, Adele has become the 4th woman to notch 2 songs that have remained at #1 on the chart for over 5 weeks each within a calendar year.
Notably, Mariah Carey was the first woman to set the bar with her songs ‘Fantasy’ and ‘One Sweet Day (With Boyz II Men)’ in 1995. The former track stayed at #1 on the Hot 100 for 8 weeks whereas ‘One Sweet Day’ dominated the summit for the last 5 weeks of that year before holding the top spot for a yet unmatched 16 weeks.
Meanwhile, Adele’s ’21′ album has returned to the top of the Billboard 200. With 13 weeks at the top of the tally, the LP has now outlasted George Michael’s 12-week run at the top with ‘Faith’ in 1988.
As predicted, Rihanna’s ‘We Found Love’ has continued its ascent on the Hot 100 following the release of its accompanying video. The song leaped from #6 to #2 after selling over 231K downloads. However, Rihanna did score her 11th #1 on the Billboard Digital Songs Chart and extended her lead as the act with the most crowned tracks on that tally.
Remarkably, Drake’s new single, ‘Make Me Proud (Ft. Nicki Minaj)’, rocketed from #97 to #9 on this week’s Hot 100 tally. The track has matched the largest ever on the lineup by a male artist set by Akon’s #95 to #7 jump exactly 5 years ago in 2006 with ‘Smack That (Ft. Eminem)’. Kelly Clarkson still holds the title for the largest ever single-week ascension with ‘My Life Would Suck Without You’, which bounced from #97 to #1 in 2009.
