Did you know that the top-selling Latin artist of the 1990s, Selena, was killed by the president of her fan club?

Selena was slain on March 31st 1995 at the age of 23 years by the president of her fan club, Yolanda Saldivar. The singer had confronted Yolanda about alleged embezzlement practices and after numerous meetings, the two met at a motel where the latter shot Selena in the arm – a wound that led to massive blood loss, which resulted in Selena’s death.

Since her passing, several performers, such as Beyonce and Jennifer Lopez, have listed Selena as a major influence on their artistry. In fact, the latter even portrayed Selena in a 1997 film about the late singer’s life and the project was regarded as the launching pad for Lopez’s then budding music and movie career.

Selena notched nine #1 singles on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart and is widely remembered for her biggest hit on the Billboard Hot 100, ‘Dreaming of You’, which peaked at #21 on the lineup after her murder. Watch the accompanying video for the song below:

Major loss for the latino community,i beyonce is from texas she was a huge in their state,a state icon as a matter of fact, its very sad to our community her loss is still felt to this very day she was very sweet & carried her self very well.MAJOR SURPRISE & RESPECT TO YOUR SITE ,FOR THIS ARTICLE! She had so much up her sleeve that she was about to do with her music!

    • SparkD

Selena was a HUGE deal in Houston, but I really wonder if Beyonce was truly inspired by her since she didn’t live in Hispanic communities or went to schools with such a large population of Mexican-Americans in Houston. When Selena died it was a huge deal, and she was the first to break the Houston Rodeo records for ticket sales (Miley Cyrus, Alicia Keys, did it too), but I wonder about Beyonce’s comments. Is it just name dropping?

    • LurkerG

@ SparkD, I’m from Texas and I live in a mostly white community and even I knew about Selena. So yeah, Beyonce probably knew of her too, and since she and her family are most likely more musically inclined than say, mine, I’d wager that she was at least in part “truly inspired” by Selena…just as she was inspired by Tina Turner, Diana Ross, Vanessa Williams, etc. I think it’s more than just name dropping when it comes to BKC as it’s so easy to SEE the influence of the artists she says she admired/s when you see her performing on stage.

RIP Selena. Awesome talent. What could have been.

    • whatever

Spark D I agree as a fellow Houstonian I agree, I find it hard to believe Bey was inspired. Selena is huge in the Latin community, I never heard of her until her untimely death. But that is just me… But whatever…It is sad that this lady who had a shady past took Selena’s life because she was in the wrong.

    • Britt Aye

@SparkD I was born and raised in a predominantly indo/black west indian community in Jamaica, Queens and knew about Selena. In fact when she was murdered I was in the 3rd grade and our teacher spoke to us about it….again this was a class full of Indian and black kids who were 1st/2nd generation americans. Just because you don’t live in a hispanic community doesnt mean u don’t know about an artist. Selena would’ve taken the english speaking music scene by storm. Its a shame that ones greed led to the death of a blossoming star.

    • Britt Aye

Ok so lets say Beyonce heard about selena for the 1st time when she was murdered….she can’t go back and listen to her music and watch her performances and take inspiration from that??? Damn, you ppl are something else. I’m no Bey stan but cut tje girl some slack. Just because YOU never heard of Selena doesnt mean Bey didn’t

    • belladonnamerie

Somehow a post about Selena ends up turning into one about Beyonce… I remember, even being in the third grade and hearing about her death which happened years before, and respecting her, going back to listen to her music, hearing my parents talk about her, watching her film and wishing she really did make it because she was a force in her time.

    • X

That was a sad day in my household. I remember my mom crying as if she had lost a sister or something smh, R.I.P. Selena!

    • DOMOdotSCORE

Selena’s music was so great. I didn’t understand a lyric in a huge majority of it because of the language but I still jammed to it. Jennifer Lopez’ portrayal in the movie was so excellent. I bought Selena’s #1s album and it’s so great.

Trent, this is one of your most important music minutes because of the level of devotion and worship that today’s music fans/stans have. I hope that no one ever takes it this level but you never know with the way the world is.

    • Tim

This is why nobody takes Rihanna stans seriously.

    • SparkD

I lived in Houston, and my hood and school was 90% latino, and although everyone knew of Selena, black people were not bopping to Selena, and didn’t try to until that horrible tragedy. I don’t believe Beyonce listened to Selena’s music or got “inspired by her then,” which was mostly in Spanish until her English songs were release when she died. Bee was young teen/pre-teen then. It was another bandwagon for people to jump on because of the large Mexican-American community support she had. Bee wasn’t hitting the Rodeo to see Selena when it sold out. But all of my friends did. Bee may have admired Selena’s “dad-manager” relationship and “borrowed” some smooth ballad sounds from her, but Selena wasn’t someone who heavily influenced her as an artists. I think it was cool for many people to say that.

    • SparkD

I’m out. But reading is fundamental. I questioned the “name dropping.” I didn’t say Bee didn’t know of her because she was black, soley. I questioned if she knew of her when she was alive and popping because she was popular in Texas waayyy with Latinos before everyone else discovered her at her death. So I wasn’t being “ignorant” questioning name dropping? And it is true, black Texans knew of Selena but wasn’t jumping on the wagon until her death.

I’m done. On to other pastures. Maybe if I bashed J. Lo’s come-uppance from Selena, when Mexican-Americans leaders clearly didn’t want J.Lo to do the role, some of you sensitive stans wouldn’t trip on here or twitter, or mislabel a support as ignorant because somebody didn’t read correctly.

      Bye!

    • Britt Aye

Spark D….. You won’t be missed!

    • Ariana

I don’t care about her songs in Spanish but her album in English is fan-tas-tic! Her singles were top notch!
      RIP

    • NotAStan

Black people just don’t listen to Black people’s music. Some Black people listen to Soca, Jazz, Opera, Hip Hop, Classical, Chamber music, etc. Some Black people even draw influence from those genres and their artists. It is not too far out of the loop to say that maybe one particular well-known music artist on the come-up at the time was indeed perhaps influenced by Selena and not just for the sake of name-dropping.

      Good day! :P
