Miguel learned a difficult lesson about the politics of the music industry last evening when he didn’t receive a single mention on the list of the 2012 Grammy Awards nominations. However, the R&B singer wasn’t shy about sharing his feelings about the snub and took to Twitter to discuss the incident.
Venting about being “pissed” regarding the event, Miguel rightfully indicated that either his ‘All I Want Is You’ debut album or Urban smash hit ‘Sure Thing’ should have received a nod for next year’s show. Read exactly what he had to say below:
MiguelUnlimited Damn, this really hurts. Congrats to all the nominees 12/1/11 12:20 AM |
MiguelUnlimited I’m Fucking Pissed Yo. I don’t think I’m Gods gift to music but I know the Album or at LEAST Sure Thing should have been Nominated. 12/1/11 12:49 AM |
MiguelUnlimited All G. Ill Work Harder Then. BET. 12/1/11 2:04 AM |
Honestly, Miguel was quite correct in his statements. ‘Sure Thing’ was one of the best R&B records of 2011 and should have been acknowledged in either the Best R&B Song or Best R&B Performance fields. However, this situation has highlighted a very important point – quality and success don’t always result in Grammy gold.
Indeed, although several stars have dominated previous Grammy shows because of their chart success, a key factor involved in the decision-making process is industry favour. Really, it’s not about how good you are; it’s more about who you know.
Other artists and Academy members vote at the Grammys, not the fans. Hence, if an act isn’t well connected with his/her peers then it is impossible for him/her to win.
Ask yourselves this, for instance: did Beyonce’s ‘Single Ladies’ win Best Female R&B Vocal Performance over Melanie Fiona’s ‘It Kills Me’ because it was really the better vocal or did it triumph simply because it was performed by Beyonce? Also, why was ‘Single Ladies’ – a Pop song – nominated in that field in the first place? Those are the questions that we need to address.
