Last week, Rihanna matched the 7-week #1 run of her monster hit ‘Umbrella’ with her latest chart-topper, ‘We Found Love’. However, the latter tune has surpassed its predecessor to give the vixen her long-running #1 song on the lineup as well as the longest residency at the summit of any song in 2011.
‘We Found Love’ has clocked its 8th week at the top of the Hot 100 with 148 million audience impressions and 149K downloads. The tune has even outlasted Adele’s Rolling in the Deep’, which dominated the chart’s peak position for 7 weeks, to become the longest-running #1 hit of 2011.
However, when there are winners there must always be losers. In this case, Katy Perry encountered a minor upset this week when her latest single from her ‘Teenage Dream’ album, ‘The One That Got Away’, lost steam at digital retailers – down 2% in sales to 116K downloads – and slipped to #5. However, the official remix of the track, which features rapper B.o.B, was officially released on iTunes yesterday and should bolster the song’s success.
Meanwhile, on the Billboard 200, Michael Buble’s ‘Christmas’ album continued to rebuff all other contenders from the top spot by selling another 448K copies. The record is now ranked as the 3rd highest-selling LP of the year with a total of 1.96 million units sold behind Adele’s ’21′ and Lady Gaga’s ‘Born this Way’, which have sold 5.28 million and 2.03 million copies, respectively.
