Adele ’21′ was crowned as Billboard’s Top Album of 2011 so it was no surprise that the record also notched top honors in her UK home territory. However, the British Soul singer had to share space in the top 10 of the UK Year-End charts with a range of foreign in artists in what could aptly be described as an invasion.
’21′ sold over 3.772 million copies in the UK since its debut on January 24th. In addition to being the top-selling album of 2011, the record also earned the title of being the most successful release of the 21st century to date – a feat that it achieved after only 10 months – and sold more copies than any other album in British history within a single calendar year.
Yet, the Americans didn’t allow Adele to have all the glory Top Albums list. Bruno Mars’ ‘Doo-Wops & Hooligans’ ranked as the 2011′s third highest-seller with 1.214 million copies sold whereas Lady Gaga’s ‘Born this Way’ placed seventh with 821K copies.
Other foreigners who outshone their peers were Canadian Michael Buble who notched the #2 position on the the Top Albums lineup with his ‘Christmas’ album, which sold 1.292 million units. Moreover, Barbadian Rihanna clocked two albums in the top ten - ‘Loud’ and ‘Talk That Talk’, which sold 876K copies at #6 and 655K at #10, respectively – and was the only act other than Adele to have two albums in the top ten. The latter’s ’19′ debut LP sold 1.210 million units at #4.
