The music industry lost one of its most iconic figures today when it was announced that Etta James had passed. After battle leukemia since 2010, the Rock & Roll legend also know as Miss Peaches passed at a hospital Riversdale, California.
James, who also suffered from dementia and hepatitis C, died earlier today after a long battle with leukemia at the age of 73 years. Her manager, Lupe De Leon, broke the news to CNN about her passing.
Known for her incredibly powerful and gritty voice, James put forward several R&B classics, such as ‘At Last’ and ‘Something’s Got a Hold On Me’. She won six Grammy Awards throughout her lifetime and was even inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1993.
Acts who have credited James as a major influence on their sound include Diana Ross, Adele, Amy Winehouse and Beyonce, the last of which portrayed her in the movie ‘Cadillac Records’. Christina Aguilera also listed James as an inspiration and covered several of her songs while on tour.
