Did you know that Santana is actually a band that was named after their lead guitarist, Carlos Santana?
Founded in 1967, Santana originally comprised members Carlos Santana, David Brown, Mike Carabello, Rod Harper and Gregg Rolie. Despite several lineup changes throughout the years, the group remained active and scored their biggest hit, ‘Smooth (Ft. Rob Thomas)’, in 1999 – 32 years after the start of their careers.
Incredibly, ‘Smooth’ held the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for 12 weeks and was the second most successful song of the 1958-2008 period following Chubby Checker’s ‘The Twist’. Additionally, Santana’s 1999 ‘Supernatural’ album was certified diamond in the US and the project earned them eight Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year and Record of the Year for ‘Smooth’, in 2000. In fact, they tied Michael Jackson, who won eight awards in 1984 for his ‘Thriller’ LP, for the most wins at a single Grammy ceremony.
