Did you know that Lionel Richie holds the record for the most career-opening top 10 singles on the Billboard Hot 100?
Following his stint in the Commodores, Richie launched his solo career in 1981 and his first 13 songs all peaked within the top 10 of the Hot 100. That streak included 5 chart-topping singles - ‘Endless Love (with Diana Ross)’, ‘Truly’, ‘All Night Long (All Night)’, ‘Hello’ and ‘Say You, Say Me’.
However, among new artists who weren’t members of groups before their respective debuts, Mariah Carey and Lady Gaga are tied as the acts with the most career-opening top 10 entries on the Hot 100. They scored 11 top 10 singles on the lineup in the 1990-1994 and 2008-2011 periods, respectively. Notably, George Michael notched 12 top 10 career-openers but he initially entered the music scene as a member of the duo Wham! in 1981.
