Did you know that Etta James’ version of ‘At Last’ is actually a cover and the song was previously performed by several artists?
James released her version of ‘At Last’ in 1960 as the title track of her ‘At Last!’ album. However, the song, which was written by Mack Gordon and Harry Warren, was previously performed by multiple acts, including legendary Jazz musician Nat King Cole.
The first recorded rendition of ‘At Last’ was first released via the film ‘Orchestra Wives’. Bolstered by Glenn Miller’s orchestra, the song was originally performed by Ray Eberle and Pat Friday, although Lynn Bari mimed to the sound of the latter’s voice in the movie.
Still, James’ ‘At Last’ was widely regarded as the standard, despite the fact that it only peaked at #47 on the Billboard Hot 100. Her tune was given the Grammy Hall of Fame Award in 1999.
