Leona Lewis saddened her fans last year when she announced that her ‘Glassheart’ album had been postponed from its November 28th 2011 release date until March 2012. Now, after barely satisfying their appetites with her ‘Hurt’ EP, the multi-octave singer has finally released the first offering from her revamped ‘Glassheart’ – a snippet of a new song entitled ‘LoveBirds’.
‘LoveBirds’ has yet to be confirmed as the official new single from ‘Glassheart’, following the grossly underwhelming lead release, ‘Collide’. However, the tune does indeed represent a new direction for Lewis, who claimed that she delayed her album because she had been received new inspiration.
So, who wrote ‘LoveBirds’? Bonnie McKee penned the track and if you’re wondering why that name looks familiar then don’t think you’re experiencing a curious case of deja vu. McKee has been quite busy during the last two years and co-wrote several major hits for Katy Perry (‘California Gurls’ and ‘Teenage Dream’) and Britney Spears (‘Hold it Against Me’).
Listen to the snippet of ‘LoveBirds’ below:
Although ‘LoveBirds’ didn’t demonstrate the grit that many of people have been hoping to get from Lewis, it is indeed a solid record and far more impressive than ‘Collide’. Indeed, this record could definitely become a major Top 40 radio hit with its basic similarities to the work put forward by Kelly Clarkson in her earlier career.
Lewis has slowly been digging deeper into her artistry as she develops her own sound. Yes, her music has generally been a very useful substitute for sleep medication – dentists probably play it for their patients before they yank a tooth - but ‘LoveBirds’ represents a welcome departure from her usual formula of bombastic vocals without meaning.
I definitely appreciate Lewis’ new direction and I am intrigued to hear more of what she has to offer in 2012.
