Dawn Richard previously shared a sneak peek of her Ev Solomon-directed video for ‘SMFU (Save Me From U)’ last week and now the full visual has been released. ‘SMFU’ is the first single from the singer’s debut solo album, ‘Goldenheart’, which will arrive in stores later this year.
So could Dawn deliver a solid video without the support of her Diddy-Dirty Money or Danity Kane comrades? Watch the ‘SMFU’ video below and find out:
Perhaps there was a hidden metaphoric message in the various scenes of this video but I frankly don’t understand the relation between the clip and the lyrics of ‘SMFU’. Really, was Dawn’s butterfly tattoo supposed to symbolise her transformation following a tumultuous relationship or was it product placement for a new tattoo parlor owned by Diddy?
Regardless of the confusion, ‘SMFU’ is still a great record. I still can’t figure out how the song will translate in a live performance but it will be interesting to see Dawn try to bring it to life.
An interpretive dancer, a facial closeup with the “Denzel in Glory” cry and symbolic images (butterfly= freedom) are some things that singers put in their music videos when they want to come across as artsy.
But anyways, I wasn’t fond of the song at first but I kind of like it now.
I like the song and love the video…I really wish nothing but success to Dawn.
BORING!!!!!!
I like the routine and the interpretive dance. I didn’t pay attention to the lyrics as I was focused on the imagery. But I like the song, harmony/melody. It’s quite nice.
I think it should have been all interior shots. That freeway, post-apocalyptic, dystopia look has been beat.
Good luck to her!
I didn’t understand the visual concept of the song. I’ve always been a fan of a music video mirroring the theme of the song and as lyrically conceptual of a songwriter is, the video seemed so out of place. The dramatic thrust of the ballerina kind of outshined Dawn and the unnecessary dance routine to a mid-tempo/ballad was just so random. Either way, I still love the song. It’s dramatically somber. Can’t wait to take a trip through Dawn’s Golden Heart!
