Adele’s ’21′ was an unbeatable force on the Billboard 200 in 2011 and it appears that the album will continue to occupy the upper regions of the chart in 2012. In fact, the record has logged its 14th week at the summit of the lineup and matched one of the accomplishments of another famous singer – Whitney Houston.
With 14 weeks at #1 on the Billboard 200, ’21′ has matched the chart lead of Houston’s self-titled debut album. The only records by female artists that have remained at the top of the tally for a longer time period were Houston’s ‘The Bodyguard’ soundtrack (20 weeks) and Carole King’s ‘Tapestry’ (15 weeks).
Coincidentally, Adele previously broke another record set by Houston when ’21′ notched its 31st week in the top 5 of the Billboard 200 and outlasted the 30-week run of ‘The Bodyguard’ to become the album with the longest stay in the top 5 since the beginning of the SoundScan era in 1991. To date, it has notched 43 of its 44 weeks of availability in that section of the chart.
