Two major achievements were logged in the Billboard history books this week but they occurred on two completely different charts by two extremely dissimilar artists. Rihanna and Adele have both made history in their individual ways on the Billboard Hot 100 and the Billboard 200, respectively.
Firstly, Rihanna’s ‘We Found Love’ has scored its 10th week at the pole position of the Hot 100 and became only the 11th single by a solo female artist to hold the top spot for as many frames. In fact, ‘We Found Love’ has become the first song by a solo female act to remain at #1 for 10 weeks since Beyonce’s ‘Irreplaceable’ in 2007.
Which song by a solo female artist has held the top spot for the longest period of time? That was Mariah Carey’s ‘One Sweet Day (with Boyz II Men)’, which dominated the Hot 100 for 16 weeks as the longest-running #1 song in this history of the chart. Additionally, after ‘We Belong Together’ ruled the listing for 14 weeks in 2005, Carey became the only solo artist to have 2 songs spend at least 10 weeks at the summit of the lineup.
Secondly, Adele continued her reign on the Billboard 200 this week as ’21′ clocked an incredible 16th frame at #1. The album has become the first album to remain at the top of the chart for as many weeks since the ‘Titanic’ soundtrack in 1998 and is second to Whitney Houston’s ‘The Bodyguard’ soundtrack as the longest-running #1 LP by a female artist in US history.
To date, ’21′ has sold over 6.05 million copies in the US. The third official single from the album, ‘Set Fire to the Rain’, has leaped from #4 to #2 on the Hot 100.
