The death of Whitney Houston sent shockwaves throughout the world and demonstrated the utter magnitude of the legacy that she crafted during her lifetime. Here in the Caribbean, Soca artist Destra Garcia was so moved by the passing of her idol that she performed a 15-minute tribute to Houston at a concert in Antigua last evening.
Garcia was the focus of our Caribbean Heat feature last month. However, instead of singing the Soca tunes for which she is famous, she covered several of Houston’s tunes, such as ‘I Will Always Love You’ and ‘Saving All My Love For You’, in her honor.
Listen to Garcia’s live tribute below:
This tribute by Garcia truly reflected Houston’s impact as a global icon. Her latter career was overshadowed by her personal struggles but during her prime, she was able to reach an audience matched by very few artists.
Garcia sounded fantastic! Singing a 15-minute medley is definitely not an easy feat but she was phenomenal from start to finish. She once again proved that Caribbean artists are among the best in the world!
