Did you know that DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince (Will Smith) were the first artists to win the Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance?
DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince won the Best Rap Performance Grammy in 1989 for their hit ‘Parents Just Don’t Understand’. The song bested JJ Fad’s ’Supersonic’, Kool Moe Dee’s ‘Wild Wild West’, LL Cool J’s ‘Going Back to Cali’ and Salt-n-Pepa’s ’Push It’ in the race for the honor.
However, the Best Rap Performance field was later separated into Best Rap Solo Performance and Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group in 1991 before being reintroduced in 2012. Kanye West and Jay-Z became the latest winners of the trophy for their collaborative single ‘Otis’.

I like “Parents Just Don’t Understand” but put up against songs like “Going Back to Cali” and “Push It”, it is very mediocre. I cannot believe that it won.
