Did you know that Ike Turner was widely regarded by as one of the founders of Rock & Roll music?
Turner composed the R&B tune ‘Rocket 88′ in 1951 but the incorporated mixture of piano, guitar, saxophone and unpolished vocals by Jackie Brenston led several music critics to consider it as one of the first Rock & Roll records. In fact, the innovative arrangement by Turner inspired Little Richard’s future classic ‘Good Golly Miss Molly’, who sampled part of the song for the introduction of the latter.
Several artists, such as B.B. King and Johnny Otis have acknowledged the influence of Turner on the development of Rock & Roll as well as R&B and even Hip-Hop. However, his domestic issues with ex-wife Tina Turner greatly overshadowed his contributions to the industry. Bother Turners were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1991.
