After an artist’s death, there is usually a sudden resurgence of public interest in that person’s music. That was exactly the case with Whitney Houston who rebounded into the top 10 of both the Billboard Hot 100 and Billboard 200 as a result of massive sales increases. Yet, even the late diva was not potent enough to match the selling power of Adele.
Houston’s cover of Dolly Parton’s ‘I Will Always Love You’ reentered the top 10 of the Hot 100 at #7 after depicting a 6723% sales spike to 195K downloads and 18 million audience impressions (up 915 %). The tune became Houston’s first top 10 single since her version of ‘The Star Spangled Banner’ peaked at #6 in 2001 when it was reissued after the September 11th attacks.
‘I Will Always Love You’ has also earned the distinction of being Houston’s first single to sell over 1 million downloads, despite the fact that it sold over 4 million physical copies since 1993. Her second highest digital seller is ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’, which sold 583K downloads.
On the Billboard 200, Houston’s ‘The Greatest Hits’ also reentered the top 10 at #6 but didn’t have enough momentum to stop Adele’s ’21′. Indeed, the latter album notched its 20th week at the summit of the lineup and matched Houston’s ‘The Bodyguard’ soundtrack as the longest-running #1 album by a female artist in the history of the chart.
Finally, back on the Hot 100, Madonna claimed her 38th top 10 hit on the listing with ‘Give Me All Your Luvin’ (Ft. Nicki Minaj & M.I.A.)’. The tune placed at #10 and extended her lead as the artist with the most top 10 singles. The Beatles rank at #2 with 34 top 10 entries whereas among female acts, Mariah Carey and Janet Jackson are tied in 2nd place with 27 top 10 hits each. Houston, on the other hand, landed 23 top 10 singles throughout her career.
