It’s that time of the year again when Vh1 relaunches the notorious The Greatest series. Kicking off the new season of fan warfare is probably the most controversial list of all - ‘The 100 Greatest Women in Music’ – and it entails several shocking rankings!
Focusing on the accomplishments of female artists from 1990 to 2012, the ‘100 Greatest’ women featured names such as Ashanti, En Vogue, the Spice Girls and several others. Unsurprisingly, Madonna and Mariah Carey have nabbed top two slots on the list, aptly reflecting their massive commercial and cultural impact.
However, the real stunner came from Nicki Minaj who placed at #40 and outranked Lil Kim at #45. Furthermore, Rihanna was positioned one spot above Celine Dion at #20 and Adele placed at #5 – higher than the late Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson and Britney Spears. Meanwhile, Ciara was completely omitted.

Who exactly compiled this list? Obviously, fans’ votes and the opinions of the Vh1 critics were key to the ranking process but some of the positions are absolutely ridiculous!
For instance, Rihanna should not be placed higher than Celine Dion – a global megastar who helped to influence a generation of artists including Rihanna! Moreover, Adele has only one blockbuster album so how is it possible for her to be positioned higher than Whitney Houston whose ‘The Bodyguard’ soundtrack alone has outsold almost every artist on this list?
At least we could all enjoy the fact that Madonna and Mariah Carey were rightfully ranked at the top. Even the executives at Vh1 knew better than to make the mistake of placing them lower on the lineup.
