Christina Aguilera performs 'The Prayer' on 'TheVoice'.

Christina Aguilera is blessed with a unique ability to transform any song into a roller coaster ride of pointless vocal runs and high notes. A good example of this was observed when she teamed with her pupil Chris Mann to cover Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli‘s ‘The Prayer’ on ‘TheVoice’ this evening.

Using the exact same vocal runs that she employs in every song, Aguilera sang the gentle ‘The Prayer’ similar to her previous hit ‘Fighter’. Don’t believe me? Watch her perform the balland with Mann on ‘The Voice’ below:

Just like the rolls of fat pressed under the straps on the back of her dress, Aguilera singing was painful to watch. She was excellent in her soft upper register but when she started belting random notes in the song I was utterly confused.

It is hard to believe Aguilera when claims to listen to Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey because they are brilliant interpreters of music. Yet, maybe she does follow their work and the problem is that she simply doesn’t pay attention because her people lying about how good she sounds while screaming her high notes are just too loud.

  Wow, that was harsh. I really don’t care about her but she didn’t do that bad. I actually enjoyed for the most part. I guess over-singing is her trademark but I’ve seen her worse, this was actually pleasant (again, for the most part)

  Trent is allowed to feel however about this performance. Critique away, it’s no secret that while being very gifted, she has poor form. What I don’t get is the deliberate mean spirited comments on her “backfat” and trying to incite stan wars. I thought this site was above that, but lately the unnecessary comments on female artists has gone in another territory. I’m a true music fan, but this blog and 99 percent of the others have really been a turn off lately.

  I think Trent is of a different time. He clearly understands music in ways that most of his readers and the other bloggers don’t. I say this because as a musician myself (I sing opera – 2nd tenor) I could hear all the flaws in Christina’s rendition of this song – her timing was off the park, her phrasing (both lyrical and melodic) was terrible and her melisma (I hate when people call it runs) was disconnected from the music.
  
  Celine’s version was beautiful. For a Pop singer, she performed it like a classically trained mezzo-soprano and that’s a rarity. I’ve only heard Whitney use her voice like that.

  Christina had her good and bad moments. She started strong. Her runs were unnecessary. No harmony could be found between her and Chris Mann. Those voices did not blend one bit.
  
  That dress was not made for Christina. I want her to find a new stylist that will dress her properly or she needs to learn to dress herself properly, one or the other.

  I had just watched your youtube vid ‘ask Trent’ and I had a huge amount of respect for you after that, then I read this and you manage to chip away at everything you said in that video. You talked about leaving a blog site because of how harsh and trashy their content seemed and how they veered away from critiques and became nasty with their comments. You talked as if you have respect for a lot of different artists and in another article on this page you even tried to say that Christina has been an artist that you really do like. You can critique her voice if that’s what you’re aiming at and suggest what (in your oppinion) she’s doing wrong and what she’s doing right. But this article was just way over the top. She didnt butcher anything and while there were times when she wasnt all the way there, again, she didnt butcher the song. I dont want to hear Christina sing a song the way someone else sings it, the same way I dont want to hear Mariah, Patti, Aretha do a song the way another one did it. That doesnt mean you turn it into vocal gymnastics but you put your spin on it while honoring it and that’s what she did. Anybody can hear that when they view the performance. I’m not sure the point of the backfat comment besides taking a cheap shot because like Christina Mariah has been known to wear things that she DEFINITELY shouldnt be wearing if that’s where you want to go. I’ll admit it, Christina is one of my favorites, probably THE favorite of mine but I also know when she’s stepping over the line or misusing her voice and this wasnt one of those times. From someone who loves to hear your sane oppinion and wishes the best for you, please dont turn into another Perez Hilton who takes bitchy shots at artists that are easy targets or who you just dont like. You’re so much better than that.

  Wow just watched this, after hearing the crap Trent was chatting on twitter I expected it to be AWFUL, but it’s actually good…
  The only problem anyone could genuinely have with this is her vocal style which is HER style so either get used to it or don’t comment. Christina has a great voice and pulled this off well and the fact that you had to bring Mariah into it is a joke, the only time she sings live these days is when she’s whispering her face off and the comments about her back fat are dumb too, yeah the dress was too tight but Mariah walks around in kids size clothes most of the times and even after losing all that weight Mariah is barely more toned than Xtina anyway… Christina stays SINGING live, Mariah stays whispering with the Ying Yang twins.

  Christina’s version was not so good. I have a friend named Kelly Levesque, who recorded the original version of Carrie Underwood’s “SOME HEARTS” about 15 years ago. She has toured with David Foster and sang with Andrea Bocelli on “THE PRAYER” and sounds 100 times better than Christina Aguilera did, and unfortunately, Kelly isn’t very well known while she really should be….take a look at this….

  I will admit, butcher is not the propper term to describe this performance, and I do addmit that I was a big big fan of her, when I was just a little girl, like nine or something, but as I got older, I knew that from all the music and singing training that I have got, she lacks propper technique.
  If she did use her voice correctlly, then I would still love her, but since she’s not doing that, I really can not say that she’s my taste of propper singers anymore.
  The notes were way to loud, the screems were way to forced, and most of all, she had way to fast vibroto for me.
  You know, she’s not my ltaste anymore, and I’m fully making my choices of singers on the voice and lyrex of singers, but first, I look at the voice, and if It’s not my taste, it’s not my taste and I’m sorry, but I’m being honest, and I’m saying this as nice as I can.
  I don’t want to hurt people, but I have to tell the truth, and I’m doing it in a nice way.
  I’m sorry Chriss, but I just can’t, I mean, I think you could improve on your voice a little bit.
  Just try not to do all these notes and runs and things like that.
