Mariah Carey Performs At Mawazine Festival In Morocco

Mariah Carey performs at the Mawazine Festival.

Mariah Carey literally just exited the Mawazine Festival in Morocco and footage of the show has already hit the web! The legendary diva rocked the crowd, which included the royal family, with performances of several of her biggest hits, including ‘Shake it Off’ and ‘My All‘.

Throughout the year, Carey has been performing at several high profile events as she builds buzz for her highly anticipated comeback album. Her previous show was at the Top of the Mountain concert in Austria.

Watch Carey perform in Morocco below:

Carey was truly at her best during this Morocco show when she was ad libbing in her milky upper register. Her voice is incredibly bright and free in that region, and she easily swoops through her range as she dips to her lower limits.

However, Carey’s belting has once again proven to be a problem. In her rendition of ‘We Belong Together’ she sounded fantastic at the end but she clearly struggled in ‘Underneath the Stars’, probably because the high belt that she tried to avoid involved flexibility that her vocals no longer possess.

Still, Carey delivered a rarity by performing the majority of this show live. It was unrehearsed and largely sung off the cuff as she kept adding and removing songs from the setlist yet didn’t take the easy route by miming entire tunes to a track.

      This show was NOT hot!
Besides WBT & Hero it was horrible

    • MyCooL

LOVED LOVED LOVED LOVED LOVED this concert!

    • olly_tei

Hit and miss from what i’ve seen.

    • Candy Bling

She killed it her voice is on top form.

    • http://butterflyexpressions.wordpress.com O’neil

MIMI SOUNDED INCREDIBLE!!!!LOVE HER!HATERS GO KILL YOURSELVES!!!!!!

    • MariahServant

She was better than Austria for sure! Mariah’s problem is not really her voice but the silly tracks that she performs like: Shake it off, Touch My Body, Obsessed ! she should try to sing stuff that sounds good live

    • Meme

There were obvious technical difficulties for the first 2/3 of the show. She pulled it out at the end when she realised she couldn’t rely on the backing track.

Her probably is she gets lazy when there’s a backing track.

    • Raisen

      The Queen of lip-syncing.

Mariah Carey does NOT sing LIVE. Never have. She always pre-records her vocals, and tbh those don’t even sound good anymore :/

    • theman

      She sounded great !!!!!!!!!

    • Darnell

Her voice makes my nipples hard

    • Candy Bling

GTFO Raisen and go clean the shit out of your ears. The queen slayed and you will stay mad.

    • Blah

She’s such a boring performer. She needs a new set-list too.

    • Liberiangirl

Mariah is not a performer as far as she will never give you drop-pop-lock it choreography. She is a vocalist and has never tried to compete with the “dancers”. You are going to get a singer maybe a little bit of dancing but overall she is there to give you a show vocally. She definitely has her rough patches while performing but what artist does not??Mariah IS a LEGEND and no one can take that away from her. Her music has inspired artists that have come after her and she produces songs that speak to you and has lyrical depth, not just a here today gone tomorrow single. Still a fan from the Mariah Carey Album, no matter how low she goes or on her worst day she is still a musical Great.

    • sam

Well done Mariah for actually singing live for a change!

    • chloe

theres nothing about these performances that reads “LEGENDARY”. Why is it tina turner who is almost twice mariahs age can put more energy into a show than mariah can? Mariah was never a show stopper so i dont know why i expect so much from her. Yes she WAS a vocalist but she cannot hang on to the past. your only as good as your last show and judging by this, shes as bad as the gimmicky pop singers of today that struggle to sing live

    • Ariana

My soul is happy every time she gets rid of her stupid back tracks and sings live. There were many flaws in some songs but there were others like WBT where she absolutely killed it!! This concert was much, much better than the one in Austria, even her wardrobe choices were better. That white/gold dress is stunning! I’m really looking forward to hearing new material from her, she IS an amazing vocalist. Flaws & all still TOPS your faves. You will deal.

    • Kayla

She did very good! I was very impressed. Mariah definitely brought it!

    • Aye Britt

Let me be honest and unbiased….Mariah lipped A LOT! The last chorus in we belong together was prerecorded. Can’t take that away from me she lipped and she also lipped in Fantasy. The thing is she doesn’t fully lip a song. There are certain parts that she knows she can’t handle. But my love for her is undeniable and I have to agree with Trent..This is was better than Austria.

    • DRB

My concern is she’s lost her vocal flexibility and can’t seamlessly shift anymore. The power is there if its just one note in one register at one time but she isn’t moving through.

Other thing, her mid range is so scratchy. It’s unpleasant. She needs to write her tell all book.

    • jerwerely girl

Mariah might not be a dancer but she did entertain me with
her little comical comment in between shows. Mariah and
JLO are showing these gimmack artist how it is done.

    • Meme

      WBT was not lipped

    • Beyfan

You have some nerve to criticize Christina, Jennifer Lopez, and Even Rihanna, when this is a fucking utter mess, I mean did you hear this? Or were you just assuming? I mean she is so far from where she was, and you think she did good? Baby get the ears checked cause your being very 1 sided and its not making you look good.

    • Tahj M.

That obsessed live performance was SO worth it…

    • BeyBoy

Some parts of the show were really off and some were really on. Her performances are the definition of hit and miss now but comparing this woman to Christina and Rihanna is crazy. She loads better than them. She is not 1995 Mariah but the bitch can still sing.

This has to be the first performance of We Belong Together in years that she didn’t lip the end. I was shocked by that. The rest of the show was so clearly unrehearsed. She needs to take a hint from Beyonce and Gaga and least rehearse before a show.

    • rick

The best performance of the night was Hero. Her voice was STRONG :O

    • Girrrl

It was ok. She made her lip syncing obvious by mixing live 2012 vocals with recordings from the 90s. She could have at least pre recorded some current vocals to make it seem real. Also, what is the point of performing songs she knows she can’t sing live anymore? She should just perform songs from the Music Box album in which she sung in the contralto range. #frustratedfan

    • larry

that Shake It Off acapella was EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!! Those live adlibs in Like That were nice! Her falsetto/head voice is so much nicer than full voice, sounded beautiful in U.T.S
We belong together sounded goooood esp with the climax!!
      heartbreaker was pooorr
this was amazing though!! she did so well!!! QUEEN!!!

    • olivia

mariah girl i love you i do but this is not the business i’m gone just pretend this never happend and go and listen to some of your old dvd’s i still love you girl but this was just no but i will say that i loved your commentary in between breaks that was cute and at least you tried and where the hell is the new album

    • Cliff

Mariah sounded great, she just needs to change her setlist, maybe remix the songs but other than that. She was funny, refreshing, real, talked to everyone, acted like a Diva, i loved it.

    • LegallySane

^Yes..new setlist! I was glad to hear that she can still sing live even when unrehearsed…If that was rehearsed… well, I think she’s lost some of her voice, but clearly she can still sustain which I believe speaks for a lot. Some of the parts she sounded like she was shouting, but she fixed it. She just needs rest..she may never sound like she did in the 90s again, but she sure can sound close or exactly like she did in ’05 with rest.

I think maybe it’s her drinking or something bc her voice sounded hurt or something…even her head voice sounded on some parts thin and weary..and that’s usually never a problem..No matter what, she will always remain one of the best vocalist know to man…she can still sing in circles around today’s competition

    • SLAYROE

Mariah SLAYED, tech problems and all

    • that nigga

    • theman

I don’t know what some of you people were watching. Her head voice is probably the best it’s ever been. “WBT” was live, that was not lipped, you can tell by the breath she took. Overall she did an amazing job. Some people just won’t be satisfied, and others are haters that are bitter because she did a great job. Who said she was drinking? This is the best her voice has sounded in a while. There are aspects of her voice that are much better now. Leave Rihanna Christina and all other nonfactors out of this. They are not at her standard. Also, to the Beyonce stan, her recent performances were the same ole, same ole, her voice sounds alot heavier & she took alot off of her vocals.

    • theman

Furthermore, her vocal fexibility is of course there, it’s just that now she’s getting more comfortable with doing more with it. Her voice now is actually much better and fuller than it was during “TEOM” era. Great job !!!!!!!!!

    • Brutally Honest

Even the crowd looked unimpressed. Mariah can no longer sing. Sorry, but it’s true

    • Brutally Honest

Seems like ‘TheMan’ is DELUSIONAL. There was nothing amazing about these performances. Mariah has never had a strong headvoice and these performances proves her drastic vocal damage.

    • LegallySane

Anybody saying she can no longer sing would also classify them as delusional IMO She’s not the 90′s Mariah, but she hasn’t lost her voice entirely and there plenty of performances from just a few years back to now that proves that statement..Mariah can still sing, she’s just a hit and miss as she’s always been since the “Butterfly” era throughout….Ppl don’t give her the props she deserves which is unfair but whatever..

I think she should start using her lower register and head voice more often..Songs that fit more of her alto range or songs she can sing at ease…like “Without You” or “Babydoll” or “Love Story”…I hope that’s what she’s doing this era

    • Kim

I couldn’t really pay attention to the singing because her outfits were just horrible to me and I thought she lost weight. They didn’t do anything to her figure.

    • total23

It Was Alright!!! Still Love You Mariah!

    • theman

@Brutally, the only delusional one is your hating negative azz. Her head voice has improved drastically & i heard some great moments in some of these performances. So sit your azz down. You stay in every post hating. Go listen to someone that you enjoy. You won’t/can’t stop her greatness.

    • theman

Also, her weight is fine. She actually looks really good….

    • theman

Speaking of the crowd, they were very engaging & roaring… Too bad for you…………

    • Ty

THIS IS THE 1ST SHOW SHE DID NOT LIP AS MUCH, THE AB-LIBS INCLUDING THE SONG SHE MADE UP WERE FRESH AND SHE JUST LOOKED INCREDIBLE……IT’S LIKE THAT WAS LIVE….AND NOW SHE SEEMS LIKE A SEASONED PRO….THANK YOU MIMI….

      Review
Last Saturday (26th May) saw famous singer and infamous Diva Mariah Carey perform at Morocco’s Mawazine Festival. Carey performed as a headline act main stage at the Moroccan Royal Family backed event to around 40,000 people in Moroccan capital Rabat.

Starting one hour and twenty minutes late, Carey walked on stage at the live, televised event to a bored, silent audience (many of whom had been treated to an astounding performance by fellow US artist Lenny Kravitz the night before), opening her set by miming along to prerecorded vocals on a club remix of one of her earlier hits. Carey then proceeded to address the largely unresponsive crowd, before instructing all film cameras to avoid close ups of her during her show. She spent some 5 minutes wandering around the stage asking crew to adjust sound levels, giving orders by singing them in rhyme over the (working?) mic. Mic check over Mariah Carey then worked her way through a shortened version of another early hit, once again mostly cooing and laughing over prerecorded vocals. Following minimal response from the crowd after this, Carey walked off stage for several minutes, returning by singing requests for a glass of water. Following this Carey proceeded to ask for her “signature” mic stand, explaining to the audience (none of whom have English as a first language) that she was the inventor of the glittery mic stand, a lot of stars had copied her and this was just one of the challenges she had had to face in her difficult career. Carey then improvised a 2 minute version of an unreleased hit, however leaving almost all the singing to her backing vocalist Treynor Rins, who she visibly clung onto for support.

As a confused crowd began to talk amongst themselves (many in the press arena debating on whether or not she was drunk ) Carey disappeared again for several minutes, leaving a panicky-looking Treynor to sing two covers, unprepared, to 40,000 people, managing to claim the only cheer and applause that night. Treynor then also left the stage, now sat in darkness, whilst the band played a Sting cover ( with no singer). More or less shoved back onto stage, Carey (now with a change of dress) conducted further sound checks before singing another shortened song – once again Treynor actually sung the vocals, whilst Carey cut over him halfway through, singing an entirely different tune. Credit is due here to the band that managed to switch melodies remarkably fast.

Carey then demanded a seat, before failing to sit on the seat, and having it removed. Carey then proceeded to ask the crowd for a shout out and cheer to her two beautiful twins up in the hotel watching their mom. Failing to rouse any response, Carey then began asking where the seat had gone. After this, Carey spent some time wandering on stage (unsteadily?) asking what the audience wanted to hear, as well as talking about how much she loved Morocco. “There’s a room in my house with Moroccan styling”, she explained, “And I wrote a lot of songs in that room. Well, Ok, So I didn’t….. but I sure thought about a lot of ideas for songs…… that I then went on to write…. co-write…. With my producer.” Silence. She then sung a few improvised lines on Moroccan people being beautiful. Silence. Changing strategy, Carey then decided to “Treat you guys to my very first song, a song my grandmother taught me when I was five years old” Carey sung around two lines in French of a nursery rhyme, before laughing and giving up.
Carey then left the stage once again. Silence for 3 minutes, before Treynor came back on to introduce the band members at length (“One of them wrote a book guys, isn’t that great?”), then the dancers, then asked (pleaded) with the crowd to show some support. Carey then reappeared (dress 3) and conducted further mic checks, before miming along to another pre-recorded hit, cooing along to most of it and wandering around stage, whilst the cameras panned in on the panicked smiles of confused band members.

Cutting her song mid-verse, Carey demanded a sofa be brought on stage. Sitting down she sighed loudly, “Some people have no idea about what one has to endure”. She then complained that the sound levels were still not quite right. Sprawled across the couch, Mariah appeared disorientated and confused, before pulling back a strand of hair and asking what the crowd thought of her earrings. Finishing her performance, Carey reportedly went immediately to a private jet at Casablanca airport and is thought to now be somewhere in Italy.

Moroccan sources backstage have confirmed that all songs on the (planned) set list were pre-recorded.
Carey was reportedly paid between 900 000 and 1.2 million US Dollars to play a 2 and-a-half hour peak night set at Mawazine, Morocco’s celebration of international music and cultural unity. She sung for around 25 minutes.

Can I just say that this concert was really enjoyable, vocally the first hour was really good but after that she went downhill a bit but her personality and the atmosphere kept it good.
I also just LOVE Mariah’s lil Divaisms on stage lmao

    • http://www.twitter.com/StopItLuke StopItLuke AKA ThatBoyLuke

@Sunshine, that review is so pressed, I watched the whole thing and you (or whoever wrote it) has just put a negative spin on everything, get a grip.

    • legallysane

Pressed like a white collar shirt

    • Juewelz03

      Mariah SANG her ass off

    • cjmyicecream

that was a mess… There was some good parts but i was mostly messy. She lipped a lot of parts. Especially the end of we belong together. If a great vocalist like Mariah Carey can deliver such a poor performance then i fear for the future with rihanna for example who is still young and still cannot sing or expand her voice. The crowd was dull, the whole thing was dull.

    • Beyfan

Anyone who thank this is a good concert is retarded, it’s that simple
