It is no secret that Whitney Houston’s legendary voice had lost its luster long before her tragic death and her final recording reminds us of exactly how hollow her instrument had become. ‘Celebrate’ is a duet between the late diva and Jordin Sparks that will appear on the soundtrack to Houston’s last film project, ‘Sparkle’.
Alongside John Legend, Sparks paid tribute to Houston at the 2012 Billboard Music Awards with a rendition of ‘I Will Always Love You’. She also presented Pat Houston and Bobbi Kristina with the Billboard Millenium Award.
Listen to ‘Celebrate’ below:
The life of Houston was truly a tragedy as we watched her crumble throughout the years. Of course, the loss of her voice was one of the most unfortunate side effects of her drug use and ‘Celebrate’ emphasises that point. Indeed, sounding thin, raspy, inflexible and strained, Houston’s voice was barely a shadow of its former glory.
Yet, nothing that we hear today could tarnish Houston’s legacy because she enjoyed several wonderful years as a vocal powerhouse. Simply remember everything she released prior to the year 2000 and remember her for the diva who she was before her drug use fully dominated her life.
