US Charts: Rihanna Nears Whitney Houston’s Hot 100 Total

Rihanna Where Have You Been TheLavaLizard

The cover of Rihanna's latest single, 'Where Have You Been'.

Last year, Rihanna matched Whitney Houston’s tally of 11 #1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 and now she is inching closer to equalling another of the late diva’s feats. Indeed, Rihanna is just a single song away from tying Houston’s total number of top 10 tunes on the chart.

Rihanna’s ‘Where Have You Been’ has advanced to #9 on the Hot 100 and ranks as her 22nd song to climb to the top 10 of the chart in just 7 years. Houston, on the other hand, notched 23 such singles throughout her career, all of which were logged during the 16-year period of 1985 to 2001.

Leading female artists – actually, all acts in the history of the Hot 100 – with the most top 10 hits is Madonna with 38 entries. Mariah Carey and Janet Jackson are tied in 2nd place with 27 songs each and Houston is 3rd with the previously noted 23.

‘We Found Love’ became Rihanna’s 11th #1 single on the Hot 100 in late 2011. The song lead the chart for 10 non-consecutive weeks and is ranked as her longest-running #1 song on the chart. The only female artists with more #1 hits are Carey (18), Madonna (12) and The Supremes (12).

See the leading releases in the top 10 of both Billboard 200 and the Hot 100 below:

      ah-mazing! Stay mad haters.

    • kkk

The queen! She will definitely overtake mariah and probably the beatles, in about 3-4yrs. That rihanna reign just won’t let up

    • TeamBreezy

She deserves all her success… #HardestWorkingChick in the Game!

    • pisces2g

I’m convinced that any country who speaks a little English are buying Adeles album, got damn girl, now we gotta wait 2 more years for the next massacre

    • YououghttobeoutofyourmothafuckingMIND

NOOOOO!!! **runs and jumps out of window**

    • theman

Rihanna can attribute most of her success to singles. They are cheap and itunes was her only saving grace. Mariah, Whitney & Janets music/catalogue/artistry is in a league of it’s own. Rihanna isn’t promised anything. So don’t jump the shark.

    • MG

      Get ‘em Rih!

If you can’t sell tickets or albums, at least you can sell singles!

    • Sarah

Yeah, but how many records did she SELL to make those songs #1/top 10? And how many did Whitney/Mariah/Madonna sell? I rest my case.

    • Ugh

      Thank gawd for technology #thatisall

    • http://Thelavalizard Sleazy

Her music will never compare to theirs she makes microwavable music and how come her albums don’t sell like the singles O_o

    • Shouw

She can have 38 1# singles if she want but we all know that she will NEVER have the status that those legends have today.

    • TeamBreezy

Loud and TTT were among the highest selling ww albums of 2011 …Loud was the 7th highest grossing tours of 2011; nearly $100 million ..

      What are yall talking about?

    • sam

Lol Whitney’s weren’t 99 cent itunes singles…but anyway Whitney’s singles stand for TALENT, HARDWORD & will forever be CLASSICS. Rihanna’s a lazy, talentless whore who won’t be remembered for anything but a cheap, talentless attention seeker who got beat that one time by her equally annoying boyfriend.

    • TeamBreezy

ur right @Sam ..Whitneys legacy will be remembered by her talent and classic songs… not her Druggie ways, dramatics and infamous marriage to bobby Brown ..

shut up!..cuz u sound so beyond stupid

    • Girrrl

Some of y’all are pressed. WHYB is a great song with a fabulous video!

    • sam

@TeamBreezy Yep…just like Elvis, Jimi, Janis, Judy, Billie, Dinah & Michael’s legacies. All raging JUNKIES. But they are remembered for being some of the most TALENTED artists ever with great music.

You’re the stupid one when you waste your time being a fan of a mediocre, wife beater. Bad music taste & no morals. YUCK.

    • Meme

I can’t wait til she over takes Madonna in number 1s!

      Fuck yeaaaaah

    • Jasmine

I know damn well someone did not compare Jimi, the greatest guitarist of all time who died at the age of 27 and inspired generations of guitarist including Prince, Slash and Lenny Kravitz, to Rihanna. I know I didn’t see that. My eyes are deceiving. Listen, when she actually takes her artistry seriously, writes her own material, and not be this sex crazed media puppet then come talk to me. Difference between Rihanna and Whitney is that Whitney is celebrate artist who has inspired legions of singers and is considered one of the greatest voices of all time. Put some sheet music in front of her and she can sing with no problem. Does Rihanna even know what sheet music is? I’ll wait…you can not compare her to LEGENDS that came before her because she’s selling SINGLES. Rihanna will be remembered because she broke records and “sung”about sex. Legends get remembered for their contributions to their craft that changed the genre for years to come. What significant contribution does Rihanna have on music that hasn’t been done already before?

    • Benron

      Jasmine
Pop fusion? Carribean music + Pop music = Rihanna’s music. Rihanna co-writes, but I Find it hillarious that she apparently has to stop doing drugs, and write her own music to be compared to someone who did neither of those!

    • http://www.sterling8.com Sterling Infinity

Agh….. Whitney I miss you, Rihanna looks sexy no lie in that video!

    • Beholden

Wait, did someone actually say hard work pays-off? :-) What part of anything Rihanna has done since 2009/GGGB era has been hard? This chick has done nothing to perfect her craft….NOTHING! I don’t dislike Rihanna, I’m just not one of her delusional fans. Rihanna gives a half hearted effort on everything but her studio sessions. “Hard work does pay-off “but that’s not the secrete to Rihanna’s success and everyone knows it!

    • larry

*creats spirit circle against Rihanna* she shant gain such!

    • Benron

@Beholden but your ignorant, she help with her tour, she rehearses constantly, and helps makes up new coreography for tour songs like Whats my name GGGB is actually right b4 she became her own #CreativeProducer so she doesen’t do “nothing” who do u think they got the name TALK THAT TALK from!

    • Nora

Rihanna is NOWHERE near the success of Mariah, Whitney, or Madonna. Her constant success does NOT equal talent. Her success is from cheap singles on iTunes & the fact that music sucks nowadays. She can’t sing, all she “sings” about is sex, and she’s not original at all. She doesn’t write her own songs either. She’s a pathetic, gimmicky artist.

    • Jasmine

@ Benron when being compared to Jimi Hendrix who: is self taught LEFTY on guitar and wrote all of his material no she’s not worthy. We’ve seen what she’s doing already. I don’t see a huge contribution and change she’s bringing to music besides playing with her pussy on stage to every song. next…

    • CHINA

Rihanna may not have the talent but her albums and singles are selling. She might not have a #1 album but her albums still sell.

    • Jdashwill

Ohhhh Lordddd!!! These conversations were all over the place! I agree with some statements and disagree with other, but to be honest Rihanna is young and have many years ahead of her hopefully & I’m sure shes going to grow into the icon all of her “diludional fans” see her to be in their eyes!

    • Jdashwill

& I bet the same people on here downing her artistry are the same people purchasing & wining to her singles

    • wayno

I think she will pass all of the above. Mariah will be surpass by the end of 2014- unless there’s a major Rihanna controversy. Just because you have more #1s or more top 10 hits don’t mean you’re a better artist… She has more hits than STREISAND….but at 62 will she be able to sell out a 52 city tour or have a #1 cd after 50 or before 30 in her case #truth
