Today (August 1st) is recognised as Emancipation Day in several former British colonies and in the spirit of this prestigious event, our Way Back Wednesday feature will focus on those artists who claimed their artistic freedom. Chattel slavery came to an end on August 1st 1834 and these acts broke free in their own special ways.
From Janet Jackson’s move against the Jackson clan in 1986 with her iconic ‘Control’ LP to the raunchy vagina monologues of Christina Aguilera’s ‘Stripped’ era, these artist revamped their music, performances and fashion to achieve their artistic freedom. However, those changes occasionally came at a cost.
Whether they were abandoned by their fanbases or their labels, some entertainers weren’t fortunate enough to score the major breakthroughs for which they hoped. Watch some of the most memorable emancipation moments of music history below:
Brandy – ‘What About Us?’
Christina Aguilera – ‘Dirrty’
Janet Jackson – ‘Control’
Mariah Carey – ‘Honey’
Michael Jackson – ‘Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough’
Pink – ‘Let’s Get the Party Started’
Most of the artists listed about enjoyed massive success when they adopted new styles but some suffered. Unlike Michael Jackson, who revolutionised Disco and R&B music in the late 1970s alongside the legendary Quincy Jones with his ‘Off the Wall’ album, and experienced a major boost in popularity, both Mariah Carey and Aguilera experienced career declines.
Carey’s ‘Butterfly’ album received rave reviews from critics and it is still regarded as her best work to date but her more Urban music alienated her conservative Adult Contemporary Pop music fans, who weren’t eager to accept her new sound and image. Of course, her public feud with her former husband and label boss, Tommy Mottola, resulted in a loss of resources to help maintain her promotional efforts, thus causing the situation to worsen – ‘Butterfly’ sold less than half of what its diamond-certified predecessor, ‘Daydream’, moved in the US.
In Aguilera’s case, she still received label support but many parents weren’t thrilled about her new raunchy and rather contrived image. ‘Stripped’ failed to match the impact of her monster hit debut album and only one of its singles – the critically acclaimed ‘Beautiful’ – managed to crack the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100.
So, does this mean that artists should just avoid chasing waterfalls and just stick to the rivers or lakes to which they are accustomed? Obviously, the answer to that would be the negative because they can be no growth without risks. It simply takes proper planning and a coordinated effort from everyone involved.
Now, let’s close by watching Ciara’s ‘Go Girl’ video. As you may remember, she attempted to enter the world of high fashion during her ‘Fantasy Ride’ era and sadly, she has been struggling to keep with the Kardashians ever since. Watch the ‘Go Girl’ video below:
