Way Back Wednesday: When Good Singers Lip-Sync

Whitney Houston performs at the 1991 Super Bowl.

Lip-syncing has long been regarded as one of the most disgraceful acts that a singer can do onstage but you might be surprised to know that it is fairly common. In fact, major performers from Whitney Houston to Leona Lewis is committed that act at least once in their careers.

This week’s Way Back Wednesday showcases some of the best singers in the industry as they lip-sync with or without good reason. Trust me, you won’t want to miss this edition of our series so strap yourselves in and watch your favourite artists in action below:

Aretha Franklin – ‘Jump to It’

    Beyonce – ‘Deja Vu’

Celine Dion – ‘Power of Love’

    Leona Lewis – ‘Happy’

Mariah Carey – ‘We Belong Together’

Whitney Houston – ‘Star Spangled Banner’

Whether they were suffering from vocal issues, dealing with external circumstances or simply forced by producers of the shows, there are many understandable reasons why good singers lip-sync. However, that decision is often made as a result of pure laziness.

For instance, Celine Dion and Mariah Carey are among the most talented vocalists in Pop music yet they regular mime their hits without reason, especially the former, who rarely sings live. Still, who are we to judge? Paying patrons, that’s who!

By the way, don’t assume that singers only lip-sync entire performs because they also mime select notes. Watch Christina Aguilera fake her way through the climax of ‘Candyman’ at the 2:50 mark below:

Love this! Artists are not robots and cant perform non stop throughout their careers live. It gets exhausting. Every artist does this.

    • Tahj

Must’ve been difficult to chose this clip out of the plethora of lipsynched performances of Mariah. In fact the entire article could’ve been inspired by her antics alone #StopSingingMyPartNowBaby .

    • brunswickboy86

Most of them did pre-recorded live vocals which is why they didn’t get much slack…you have someone like Chris Brown who basically performs to the CD version of a song

I would rather an artist lip syncs to pre-recorded live vocals over CD vocals playing along

    • sam

Whitney was forced to lip-sync. Everyone knows Whitney sang live 90% of her entire career. According to the producer (in his book) Whitney recorded her version in one take! #diva

    • theman

Tahj sit down. Cuz she didn’t say that quite often.

    • theman

Also, artists are told to lipsync for certain events, so that there aren’t any discrepencies.

    • Adrian

Well Tahj you seem extra pressed today…so much in fact that you can’t even use proper grammar. #StartReadingABookNowBaby

    • China

Wow Christina was so gorgeous and in shape. I’m praying for her tonight.

    • CD

Celine mimes the least out of all the divas. People just find it hard to believe that her voice sounds like the CD and her voice hasn’t changed as much as the others.

    • TheBoss

Leona Lewis – ‘Higher’…. You mean ‘Happy’ right?

    • Kayla

Queen Aretha, you know that you are one of the best that ever did it! But honey boo boo, what do you have on?!? No, no, no, miss thang!!!

    • iloveme

I think all performers do lip sync at one point or another. We all know EVERYBODY on soul train did it that’s just how it was back then on that show. Nothing wrong with it if u doing multiple songs I’m sure its alot on the vocal cords. Some people do it often like Ms. Britney Spears I don’t recall her ever singing live she rarely does hmmm I wonder why?

    • tales

Celine hasn’t sung live since…I’ll be back when I find it

I’ve always been against lipsyncing, especially when it’s a concert that people are paying big bucks to see. It’s one thing to do it on one particular show because you’ve totally lost your voice and didn’t want to cancel, and it’s another thing to do an entire tour of lipsyncing. It seems to me that there’s a double-standard in the music business, because the virtually unknown upcoming artists are expected to perform totally live, while the more experienced and well-known artists lipsyc their shows all the time and most people don’t make much of an issue about it. And even if they do complain, they still pay tons of money for tickets to come see the shows. We have shows like American Idol where contestants are required to sing live and sound fantastic. During auditions they can’t even have an instrumental track to back them up, or use a microphone to add some echo. It has to be totally acappella and totally live, and the judges love nitpicking every little sour note or missed lyric. Yet, Jennifer Lopez or Paula Abdul get up on stage to perform their latest single and just lipsyncs to the track on the CD. She they receive a standing ovation for that. A perfect example of the double-standard in the world of music. By the way, I don’t buy into the excuse that pop stars have to lipsync because you can’t sing well and dance at the same time. I saw The Cadillacs a couple years ago and they are a doo-wop group from the 1950′s whose members are all in their 70′s. They sang a rock & roll classic called “Speedoo” totally LIVE as well as many others, and they danced all over the stage during the show. If guys in their 70′s can sing and dance (and I do it all the time as well), you can’t convince me that a young pop star can’t do it. If they can’t perform live, it’s probably because they can’t really sing, or they just choose not to sing. Plus, who ever said a singer has to dance and jump all over the stage anyway? That’s what you have backup dancers for! The singer is there to sing!

    • http://www.derekevan.com Derek Evan

True, some TV shows, do require that an artist lipsync their performance, and that’s usually because they are looking for perfection for the broadcast. Also the live appearance is usually more about promoting the artist’s new song than it is about putting on a live show. However, live concert tours are a whole different story. I’ve never heard of anyone being forced by a tour promoter to lipsync all their shows. That is always the decision of the artists or their management, and I think those who choose not to sing live either don’t have any singing talent, or just have no integrity. Either way they are ripping off people who are paying good money to come to a LIVE concert!

    • Yeah.

      @Tahj…sit, you failed.

    • MLG

Only jealous people believe Whitney Houston lip synched the national anthem since no one has and no one ever will do it better than she did point blank.

      • TheMadMaverick

No, it is established that most people are required to lip-sync the Super Bowl performance. Whitney was lip-syncing here, they have admitted it.

    • Gabriel

Hmmm I don’t believethat anyone has sang the star spangledbanner in a setting like that live. It was very humid in Florida and therefore the producers felt that she should go with the recorded version. Whitney is the singer that least lypsang even in bad vocal condition. She really needed not be mentioned there was no milli vanilla when it came to miss Whitney.

    • TheMadMaverick

Beyonce isn’t lipsyncing. It’s too obvious.
