Karen Clark Sheard Stuns With Mariah Carey BMI Tribute Performance

If you thought Fantasia and Joe’s tributes to Mariah Carey at the 2012 BMI Urban Music Awards were amazing then you haven’t seen anything yet! Also on the bill was Gospel singer Karen Clark Sheard, who performed a stunning rendition of Carey’s ‘Anytime You Need A Friend’ in honor of the diva.

While speaking of Carey’s influence on the music industry, Sheard noted that she often studies the work of her peer and regards her as “the greatest”. Similar sentiments were shared by BMI chief Del Bryant, who presented Carey with the Icon Award and declared that she is “the greatest singer in history”.

Did you feel the Spirit touch you while watching Sheard’s performance? Did you feel it shake you and scream “born is the King”? It really doesn’t get much better than a showing like this where Sheard brought new life to a song that I personally regard as one of Carey’s best!

  This song is the reason I became a fan of Mariah and that’s why probably I didn’t enjoy this performance too much. Mariah’s singing on this song is perfection, I remember her singing it live several times and they were all amazing.
  I appreciate Karen’s effort but mostly I just heard screaming and unnecessary runs, so no. I didn’t like this.

  Sorry but these church singers get on my nerves sometimes. I mean she did good and all that. But people saying “you can find girls on every church who sing better than…” is just a cliche. Very very few people have voices that really have it all like Mariah or Whitney: power, elegance, tasteful tone, beauty, softness, class, etc
  My fav performance of that night honoring true great Mariah Carey was Joe, you don´t need to scream to be heard
  Still, this was beautiful enough for this type of church singer

  honestly i love joe’s version best he really put his foot in that i did like this also but she changed it so much and turned it into a gospel song which i guess it is. MARIAH PLEASE SING THIS SONG AGAIN and stop singing the same setlist for the last 10 years it’s getting tired

  I didn’t think it was that amazing. Too many Gospel artists SCREAM songs and think it does it justice. I can understand why European schools of thought sometimes think our way of singing is wrong. That’s why Whitney and Mariah will go down as the best because they knew how to take another person’s song (especially Whitney who was legendary at improving originals/classics) and do it true vocal justice without hacking it to pieces.

  OMG Trent, the Music Box album was where Mariah gave some of her best vocals. A gospel artist was the perfect choice to sing this song since it has such a gospel/church feel to it. Love it.

  Karen Clark Sheard is a classic old school gospel singer…she is 52 years old and always delivers a soul wrenching performance. You guys have to understand that 93-96 Mariah is the best singing this world has seen hands down!! So nobody can touch it. The point of this performance was for Karen to pay homage, which she did. She is a woman of God just like Mariah who is sharing her gift with the world…singing for the Lord..not to be judged! Enjoy the performance and have 10,000 seats!

  Karen Clark Sheard made the song her own..she has something that TONS of artists lack and even in the gospel genre and thats the anointing to destroy the yolks! Karen didnt perform she MINISTERED and made it personal to mariah and agree with angela above she loves Mariah and Mariah loves her…its no secret Gospel has LONG had an influence on secular music..most secular artists started in the church..im not a fan of all the hollering..but musically categorized as “melismas” is the Clark sisters sound so it was expected nevertheless BRAVO KAREN
