Did you know that Diana Ross was nominated for both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe?
Ross was nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award at the 1973 ceremony for her role in ‘Lady Sings the Blues’. The film was based on the life of the late Billie Holiday, who died in 1959 at the age of 44 years after a life of drug and alcohol abuse.
Ross also earned a nod for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama at the 1973 Golden Globe show. Yet, similar to the list of Grammy Award nominations that she nabbed throughout her long career, she didn’t win either award. Watch Ross perform ‘The Man I Love’ in ‘Lady Sings the Blues’ below:

i wanna see the movie
4 decades it is still my belief that Diana deserved to win the Oscar. While I enjoyed Liza in “Cabaret”, Liza was already a one-note actress as her performance previously in “The Sterile Cuckoo” was very similar to her portrayal of Sally Bowles. Diana, with only a handful of roles, was vastly different in “Mahogany”, daringly tentative in “The Wiz” and then her most significant role after “Lady Sings the Blues”, in her 3rd Golden Globe nominated role in “Out of Darkness”. Even the pop culture “Double Platinum” proved to be light weight fun. Partly because of Hollywood’s less than welcoming stance for black actresses, along with Berry Gordy’s over protectiveness of Diana, we seem to have missed an opportunity to see what true impact Diana could have made on the silver screen. Look at her television specials to experience her gift for comedic fare. I say “seem to have missed”, because there is still a slight chance for Diana to reconsider her commitment to acting in the 6th decade of her career. While I yearn to see her in the movies again, a Tyler Perry project just somehow doesn’t seem appropriate. But kudos to Mr. Perry for acknowledging Diana’s thespian talents. Finally, additional prove that Liza’s win was more Hollywood bias to her Garland pedigree, Liza didn’t have too much to offer as a silver screen siren. Even Liza once stated that, “Diana deserved to win”. In my heart, and the heart of her millions of fans, Diana did indeed win that night!
