Did you know that Reggae music icon Bob Marley never won a Grammy Award?
Despite garnering worldwide attention for his contributions to both Reggae music and general popular culture, Marley never won a competitive Grammy. However, he was honored with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001 (20 years after his death).
Ironically, several of Grammy’s sons are multiple Grammy winners. For instance, Ziggy Marley has won the Best Reggae Album trophy on 4 separate occasions (the award was established 4 years after his father’s death), Damian Marley has 3 awards in various fields and Stephen Marley has 5 to his name.

What are Grammys really? Beyonce has 16 while Mariah, Whitney, Celine, Diana Ross, Tina Turner, Led Zeppelin, Queens, Beatles, etc have considerable less or none.
The grammy committee is made of industry people: artists and executives alike. So some people in the committee tend to vote for their friends or the ones they really like (personal association or not) while others focus on the music and vote based on its merit. We all have our own biases when it comes to certain songs and artists so I’m certain that the committee members have their own as well.
Exactly. When judging how successful or influential an artist is, you cannot just look at one thing like number of Grammy awards won or #1 singles. There are a whole slew of things that need to be considered – album sales, cultural impact, influence on other artists, impact on the musical landscape, etc. You have to look at everything as a WHOLE because evidently, the number of Grammy’s an artist has won does not necessarily equate to or represent an artist’s overall influence, talent or success.
Yeah but you also have to consider the time period in which these awards were being given. In the past there was excess superior talent, much less categories so hence much harder to win an award.
Also, in the case of Marley, reggae then and even now (in some circles) was considered way too radical.Hence, I am sure is the reason he was deliberately snubbed.
As far as Beyonce, Kanye and Alicia all having tonnes of Grammys I feel they are favored not only by their celebrity but by the general lack of MAINSTREAM impressive talent, and the excess of categories
exactly! and thats why in the past decade you see artists who come and sweep 5+ grammys in one night, lauryn hill, norah jones, adele, beyonce, amy winehouse etc. that only happened on rare occasions in the past because there was a greater amount of quality in the mainstream.
now you have the elite few who make the good music and have the talent to deliver (alicia, beyonce, kanye etc).
regardless, there is still a bias BUT these artists of today who have loads of grammys are lucky enough to have peers who are below standard.
