Adele’s ’21′ surpassed 10 million copies in US retail sales this week and earlier today, the diva was awarded with a special honor. Acknowledging shipments exceeding 10 million copies, the RIAA has officially certified ’21′ 10x platinum, which is commonly known as diamond status.
’21′ has joined the list of just over 100 titles that have been certified diamond since the RIAA was officially launched in 1958. With 92 weeks logged on the Billboard 200, the album has achieved that lofty status in less than 2 years and is the first single disc LP to accomplish that feat in such a short time period since ‘N Sync’s ‘No Strings Attached’ in 2000.
Additionally, Adele has become the first British solo female artist to garner a diamond-certified album in the US and the first British act – solo or group – accomplish that act in less than 2 years. Furthermore, she joins Celine Dion, The Dixie Chicks, Whitney Houston, Alanis Morissette, Britney Spears, TLC and Shania Twain as the only women to nab a diamond certification for their works within a 2-year frame.
The most recently released album to reach diamond status in the US was Usher’s ‘Confessions’. That record-breaking LP arrived in stores in 2004 and as a ramification on continually declining sales across the industry, many suspected that it would have been the last of its kind.
