Adele finally did it! After ruling the Billboard 200 throughout 2011 and a large portion of 2012, the British singer’s ’21′ album has topped the 10 million sales mark in the US and earned her a place in history among the best-selling artists of the last 20 years.
With sales exceeding 28K copies this week, ’21′ has sold over 10.02 million copies since being released in the US on February 22nd 2011. The album has yet to leave the Billboard 200 since debuting at #1 with 352K copies sold in its debut frame 92 weeks ago.
Ironically, ’21′ is the 21st album of the SoundScan era, which started 21 years ago in 1991, to sell north of 10 million copies in the US. The LP sold a shocking 5.82 million in 2011 as the year’s best-selling release and is on track to top the Billboard Year-End chart again as 2012′s leader. It has sold 4.2 million copies since January 1st 2012 as the only album to move over 4 million units in the US this year.
’21′ lead the Billboard 200 for 24 non-consecutive weeks and remained in the top 10 of the lineup for 80 weeks, 78 of which were achieved consecutively (a record among female artists). All 4 of the album’s singles peaked within the top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100 and 3 of those songs lead the chart - ‘Rolling in the Deep’, ‘Someone like You’ and ‘Set Fire to the Rain’.
