Did you know that today is the 30th anniversary of the release of Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ album?
‘Thriller’ arrived in stores on November 30th 1982 and quickly elevated Jackson to legend status. The album generated 2 #1 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 – ‘Billie Jean’ and ‘Beat It’ – and held the top spot of the Billboard 200 for record 37 weeks. The only album that remained at the chart summit for a longer period of time was ‘The Westside Story’ soundtrack (54 weeks).
Additionally, ‘Thriller’ was the best-selling album in the US in both 1983 and 1984. The LP also became the first to generate 7 top 10 hits on the Hot 100 and has thus far been certified 29x platinum by the RIAA, thus far making it the top-performing album in US history alongside the Eagles’ ‘Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975′.
Jackson took home 7 Grammy Awards for the ‘Thriller’ album in 1984 – her won an eighth trophy for his contributions to the ‘E.T. the Extra Terrestrial’ soundtrack – including Album of the Year. Watch the iconic video for the ‘Thriller’ title track below:
