The music scene today is dominated by a host of sugary Pop acts but this is simply a case of history repeating itself. The sub-genre of Bubblegum Pop rears at least once decade and once of the most notable periods was during the late 1990s, as depicted by this week’s Way Back Wednesday.
During the 1997-2002 era, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, ‘N Sync and several other performers were carefully marketed to capture the teen market that Justin Bieber dominates today. Singing generic Pop hits, they were the faces of the MTV TRL generation and the guilty pleasures of those of us who should have known better.
Watch videos by some of the popular Bubblegum Pop acts below:
98% – ‘I Do (Cherish You)’
Britney Spears – ‘Baby One More Time’
Christina Aguilera – ‘Come On Over (All I Want Is You)’
Jessica Simpson – ‘Irresistable’
Mandy Moore – ‘Candy’
‘N Sync – ‘Bye By Bye’
Spice Girls – ‘Say You’ll Be There’
The late 1960s, mid-1980s and late 1990s were ruled by generic Bubblegum Pop performers. However, despite singing music that had little depth, they were all immensely talented when compared to the acts of today. Really, can you imagine One Direction and Bieber sharing a stage with ‘N Sync or a pre-medicated Spears?
