The Eternal Flame Award
When I first proposed the Eternal Flame Award for lifetime achievement to the rest of The Lava Lizard team, there was one artist’s name that immediately came to mind – Janet Jackson. Indeed, despite her enormous list of accomplishments and obvious influence on generations of performers, Janet’s impact is still grossly undervalued.
Since, launching her recording career with her self-titled debut album in 1982, Janet has evolved from just another wannabe superstar sibling of her brother Michael to a true force of nature. She is the very definition of an icon, and countless entertainers, including as Beyonce, Usher, Ciara, Rihanna, Aaliyah and even Michael, have been inspired by her work.
So, it is an honour to celebrate the 30-year career that Janet has enjoyed and a legacy that is upheld by the young acts who emulate her style. An eternal flame never fades and neither will the influence of Ms. Jackson!
Watch Janet perform “Together Again” live at the 1997 American Music Awards below and think of all the artists who have been been inspired by her:
