Last evening was the season premiere of American Idol, and the show entailed more subtle insults and diva moments than any of us predicted. Yet, aside from the tension and shockingly low ratings, the panel’s critiques remained the focus of attention. So, as a fun activity, you’re getting the chance to vote for the better judge between standouts Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj.
The first episode of thew revamped American Idol garnered 17.9 million viewers, which represents a stark 19% decline from last year’s premiere. Those of us who watched the show, however, got the chance to see if Carey’s years of experience and Minaj’s fresh eyes were a suitable addition to the panel. By the way, Keith Urban was there as well but mainly as a buffer between the duelling superstars.
Carey was in rare form last evening as unsuspecting American Idol viewers got the chance to see her diva demands first hand. We’ve always heard rumours about her quirks but nothing could have prepared us for the numerous requests for more ice, references to Mean Girls that often interrupted the contestants and a clear lack of interest in the opinions of the other judges.
Still, Carey’s analysis of the young hopefuls was unmatched and her trained ear helped to her pick out the very best aspects of their vocals. Also, unlike Minaj’s repeated technical critiques regarding tone – probably the only facet of singing that she understands – Carey was able to judge pitch, technique, tone, texture and even the music of mid-1980s Bon Jovi!
Minaj, on the other hand, brought a different appeal to American Idol. She appeared more genuinely interested in the human side of the contestants and offered words of encouragement to those who were left stunned by Carey’s list of “alternatives.” Remember when James Bae was rejected and Carey suggested that he become a DJ instead of using his voice?
The main downside of Minaj’s judging? She was more interested in using every opportunity to snipe at Carey and assert her position on the panel than to chat about the actual singing. Indeed, there were moments where she was so excited to argue with Carey that she didn’t even recognise that her “idol” was agreeing with her.
Now that I’ve given you a quick recap of the American Idol drama, the time has come for you to share your own opinions, and cast your vote for the better judge between Carey and Minaj. Join the fun!
