Sade’s career extends for almost three decades with a musical impact rivalled by very few acts. Lead by the incomparable Sade Adu, the band has inspired the sound and image of various performers, including Drake, Aaliyah, Maxwell and Mary J. Blige.
However, what truly makes Sade great is their unique blend of of Quiet Storm, R&B, Soul and Jazz. They are among the few originals in the industry; groundbreakers and innovators of a special brand of music that simply can’t be easily imitated, although Alicia Keys has tried and failed many times.
As we sing Sade’s praises, let’s use this week’s Way Back Wednesday to reflect on their most memorable hits. Watch some of the group’s best videos and live performances below:
“By Your Side”
“Cherish the Day”
“Is it a Crime”
“King of Sorrow”
“Kiss of Life”
“Love is Stronger than Pride”
“No Ordinary Love”
“Smooth Operator”
“Soldier of Love”
“The Sweetest Taboo”
“Your Love is King”
Of course, Adu is the key facet of Sade’s sound. Her unique, smokey contralto is the soft satin sheets on which millions of children have been conceived. Perhaps that joke was a bit much but doesn’t she make you think of a stormy summer night during which the power goes out and…?
Adu’s singing simply wonderful. She teaches us that being a skilled vocalist isn’t about over the top runs and roaring belts. Rather, she focuses on tone, harmonies and the actual music, thus making her one of the most important singers of our time.
