Melanie Fiona honors the late Whitney Houston during her Billboard showcase.

It has been a year since the tragic death of Whitney Houston and as the industry continues to mourn her passing, Billboard has launched a special series to honor her legacy. Adding to the string of tributes were Melanie Fiona and Chrisette Michele with covers of their favourites songs in the diva’s catalogue.

Fiona tackled one of Houston’s often forgotten anthems, “One Moment in Time”. The song was definitely a hit in its day but has since been overlooked in favour of the monster hit “The Greatest Love of All”. Well, except during Olympics season.

“It’s almost like the forgotten gem of her catalog,” noted Fiona about “One Moment in Time”. “I feel like this record is just so powerful and has such a positive message. I think that people need to hear that and be reminded of that.”

However, Michele chose to take her set in another direction. Instead of trying to belt one of Houston’s ballads, she gave the bubbly Pop song “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” an R&B makeover. That was a smart choice because many lungs have been sacrificed by singers during their quest to match Houston’s original.
