Usher revolutionised the R&B music scene with his heavily praised Diplo production, “Climax”, and Chris Brown is ready to follow in his more seasoned counterpart’s footsteps. Of course, we all know that Brown has a long way to go before he could fill Usher’s shoes but he has been working to develop his craft in preparation for his new album, X.
Enlisting Diplo to helm several of his new cuts, including the lead X single, “Fine China”, Brown has dialled back the auto-tune and placed increased emphasised on his biggest weakness – singing. That’s right, we’re about to hear his vocals without his Darth Vader voice changer for the first time in years.
“For “Fine China”, I wanted to go more nostalgic, bring Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Sam Cooke to it, but also bring a new sound to what my audience and fans are listening to,” Brown stated to MTV News. “I wanted to have the same mentality as I did with the first album — me being green, me not thinking I know what’s hot and what’s next, me just being Chris Brown. I think this will show my vocal ability a lot more. I’ve developed a falsetto, I can sing at a higher register, and I can elaborate more on my skill.”

Now, back to the news. Brown also shared the titles of several songs from X with MTV News, such as the emotional “Autumn Leaves”, which features Kendrick Lamar, and the metaphorical “Add Me In”. The latter tune was produced by Danja and has been described as “old-school with a new-age feel.”
Diplo had the honor of producing the X title track, which is a mix of 808s and of course, Dubstep beats. Brown indicated that the record will comprise a pleasant blend of both Pop and Hip-Hop, thus keeping it in line with the sound expected by his core fan base.
The coming of age X album will arrive in August. Brown has already filmed the video for “Fine China” and it is expected to debut during the coming weeks. There is no word regarding if Rihanna has contributed to X or if her Skype vocal coach had a hand in Brown’s new approach to singing.
