Fantasia previously indicated that her new album, The Side Effects of You, would channel the essence of the now unappreciated mid-20th century era of Rock, Soul and Jazz. However, the latest song from the set is far from the slick Tina Turner-styled “Lose to Win”. Rather, “If I Was A Bird” is just a typical Fantasia track.
Sounding as though it could have beeb a leftover song from an early-2000s Neo-Soul album by India.Arie, the title of “If I Was A Bird” is far more interesting that the song itself. Still, don’t take my humble word for it. Listen to the song for yourself below:
If Fantasia plans to use “If I Was A Bird” as just a simple album-filler then it would be quite understandable because every concept record – if you think The Side Effects of You fits that bill – needs an anchor for those fans of an artist’s earlier works. Indeed, if you enjoyed her Back to Me album then this track should keep you satisfied while you skip the edgier tunes found on the rest of The Side Effects of You. Balance is the name of the game.
