When it was announced that Beyonce and Andre 3000 had recorded a cover of Amy Winehouse’s classic “Back to Back” for The Great Gatsby soundtrack, fans of the late singer became immediately upset. Now, after weeks of angry comments and disbelief, the full version of the “new song” has been released.
This version of “Back to Black” will be available on The Great Gatsby soundtrack when it hits stores on May 7th. Other artists’ featured on the set include executive producer Jay-Z, Emeli Sande, Florence + The Machine, Lana Del Rey, Q-Tip, Fergie and The xx. You don’t care about all that jazz, though, because you’re excited to hear Beyonce and Andre 3000’s take on the song. So, listen to it below:
Although Beyonce and Andre 3000 deserve our appreciation for completely revamping “Back to Black” instead of trying to match Winehouse’s version, their effort was completely unnecessary. The Great Gatsby film is centred on the excitement 1920s New York, therefore the original version of “Back to Black” would have better suited the theme of the film.
Honestly, the authenticity and natural character of Winehouse’s voice as well as the Jazz and Blues elements of the “Back to Black” original would have been ideal for The Great Gatsby. Beyonce and Andre 3000’s contemporary version, on the other hand, is quite jarring on the lineup of songs, which includes Sande’s Swing remix of “Crazy in Love”. This is simply a case of learning when to leave well enough alone.
