While chatting to MTV News about his new X album, Chris Brown stated that the record was heavily influenced by the works of Stevie Wonder, Sam Cooke and Michael Jackson. However, the video for the Diplo-crafted lead single, “Fhine China”, draws closer to imitation than just inspiration.
Copying the ad-libs, mannerisms and even the signature exclamations for the late King of Pop, Brown basically recreates the Jackson’s work with a modern twist. Think I’m exaggerating or being overly analytical? Watch the video for “Fine China” below:
There comes a point in every artist’s career when he has to make his own path in the industry instead of emulating his inspirations. Yet, Brown still hasn’t fully grasped that level of understanding and “Fine China” proves that he found the “new sound” that he thought he created.
Still, that doesn’t mean that the “Fine China” song or video is a weak effort in any way. Brown is singing without much studio assistance and the music is quite catchy. Of course, the genius of Diplo’s composition, which mixes Disco, R&B and a bit of Electro, was the real highlight. Well, other than Brown’s dance moves. “Fine China” is definitely a hit so let’s see what Brown does to promote it.
