Emeli Sande a very, very brave woman. The soprano singer was tapped to honor the legendary Carole King, who received this year’s Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song at the White House, at she chose to cover one of the greatest records of our time, “(You Make Me Feel) A Natural Woman”.
Of course, “Natural Woman” was immortalised by the incomparable Aretha Franklin, who released the song in 1967 as a single from her Lady Soul album. Since that time, the tune has been associated with the Queen of Soul as one of her definitive hits, despite being covered by numerous artists, such as Whitney Houston and Kelly Clarkson.
So, how did Sande handle the giant task of covering “Natural Woman”? She sat at her piano and stayed focused on the music as King and US President Barack Obama looked on. Watch Sande perform her version of “Natural Woman” below:
