Jessie J has never backed down from a challenge and at the 2013 Mawazine World Rhythms international Music Festival last weekend, she tackled material by some of the music industry’s greatest singers. Bald-headed and bold, the feisty performer cared to cover songs by Mariah Carey, Chaka Khan and Luther Vandross.
In addition to thrilling the Mawazine crowd in Rabat, Morocco with renditions of her own tunes “Stand Up”, “Nobody’s Perfect”, “I Need This”, “Do It Like a Dude” and “Domino”, Jessie J honored the artists who had the biggest impact on her music. She kicked off her special 80s Medley segment by singing The Fatback Band’s “I Found Lovin’” before moving onto Khan’s “Ain’t Nobody” and the late Vandross’ “Never Too Much”.
However, the moment the really caught her fans’ attention was Jessie J’s cover of Carey’s “Emotions”, complete with the extended introduction from the diva’s 1991 MTV Unplugged EP. Thankfully, Jessie J understands the limits of her voice and avoided those crazy high notes that set Carey a few steps above every singer of her generation. My dogs are grateful, Jessie J.
