Dear ladies of Destiny’s Child, you’ve changed and I mean that in a good way. Kelly Rowland reunited with her bandmates Beyonce and Michelle Williams for a new song called “You Changed” from her upcoming Talk a Good Game album, and this lengthy snippet of the tune showcases exactly how each member has grown.
Co-written by Rowland, Harmony Samuels and Courtney Harrell – expect Beyonce’s name to appear on the final album credits – “You Changed” is an ode to contemporary R&B with a vocal arrangement that channels the Aretha Franklin era of 1970s Soul. In fact, the song is a clever throwback to Destiny’s Child’s Destiny Fulfilled and a fitting part two to “Girl”.
However, the real difference between “You Changed” and previous Destiny’s Child works is observable in the ladies’ vocals. Each member’s voice and singing style has evolved compared to her younger years. Rowland, for instance, is definitely more confident and her voice has more resonance. Beyonce, on the other hand, has gotten more weighted and she has substituted her flurry of jazzy runs for darker, aggressive growls and vibrato.
