Last week, we kicked off our special Way Back Wednesday series focusing on artists’ signature songs by highlighting the works of Janet Jackson. To keep the momentum going, it’s only right that we shine the spotlight on another dancing diva – the hip-shaking, wig-tossing Beyonce.
Throughout her solo career, Beyonce has scored numerous blockbuster hits, thus making the task of naming her definitive record a challenging task for both her fans and critics. So, this is your chance to add your opinion to the mix and finally draw a conclusion on the matter. Check out the list of Beyonce’s signature song selections below:
“Baby Boy (Ft. Sean Paul)”
“Crazy in Love (Ft. Jay-Z)”
“Dangerously in Love”
“Halo”
“Irreplaceable”
“Listen”
“Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)”
“Irreplaceable” topped the Billboard Hot 100 for a longer period than any of Beyonce’s hits (ten weeks) but does that make it her signature song? This is truly a difficult debate but I consider her definitive tune to be either “Crazy in Love” or “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” with more of my money bet in favour of the latter.
“Crazy in Love” was Beyonce’s breakthrough single and made her a household name throughout the US as the song that made her a solo star. However, “Single Ladies” catapulted her to icon status and cemented her position as global chart force. Of course, we can’t forget the accompanying dances of both tunes, regardless of how unoriginal.
Other strong contenders for Beyonce’s signature song include the talent show favourite “Listen” and her usual concert closer, “Halo”. Yet, those tracks are rarely mentioned in discussions of her most memorable hits, despite being clear fan favourites.
What is Beyonce’s signature song? What other songs should have been mentioned? Vote in the Way Back Wednesday poll and share your opinion!
